The system keyboard on the iPhone and iPad is great for
typing, but by default the iOS keyboard makes a clicking noise every time you
press a key. If you find iOS's keyboard clicks annoying you may want to switch
them off. Help is at hand: here is our guide to turning off the iPhone and
iPad's keyboard noises.
There are a few different techniques to getting rid of the
keyboard clicks in iOS 8. Here are the three ways to mute your iOS keyboard:
How to turn off keyboard clicks on an iPhone using the mute slider
The easiest way to quickly turn off keyboard clicks in iOS 8
is to use the Mute slider. This is the rocker switch located on the left-hand
side of the iPhone, just above the volume control. When it's pulled forward,
your iPhone makes noises; when it's pushed back the iPhone is silent.
Using the iPhone's Mute switch is the fastest and easiest
method; unfortunately it's not a perfect solution. The Mute switch gets rid of
all sound from your iPhone, including any music you might have playing, game
audio and ringtone alerts. So if you do this you will have to switch the Mute
slider back to on when you've finished with the keyboard.
This technique also works with some iPads... sort of. Most
iPads do have a mute switch, like the iPhone (it's on the righthand side, above
the volume buttons), but this switch actually does double duties: the user sets
it to either mute and unmute the volume, or lock and unlock the orientation of
the screen (ie it lets you stop the screen from rotating when you turn the
device). If your hardware switch is set to lock/unlock the screen orientation,
you'll have to go into the Settings app. Tap General, then under 'USE SIDE
SWITCH TO:', tick mute.
And this all applies to older iPads. The Mute/Lock
Orientation switch doesn't even exist on the newest full-size iPad, the iPad
Air 2.
How to turn off keyboard clicks on an iPhone and iPad using the volume controls
By default, the keyboard click noise is linked to the rest
of the iOS device's volume settings. So you can turn off the keyboard click
noise on an iPhone or iPad by simply turning down the volume.
Tap and hold the Volume Down setting. Or slide up from the
bottom of the screen to reveal Control Centre, and use the volume slider. Slide
it to the bottom to set the volume to silent.
While this technique works on the iPad as well as the
iPhone, it also reduces and mutes the other audio on your device. So you won't
be able to listen to music or app audio.

iPad is to use the Sound options in Settings. Here is how to turn off keyboard
